Niki Martinus is one of Kelowna's top drawer female vocalists who simply possesses something "extra" in her voice. It goes beyond just having great pitch and really good range and the ability to sing many styles well; her voice is just somehow
drenched in tone. It oozes warmth and depth and roundness and other qualities that result in a richness that is very pleasant to the ear.
Even with a smaller than expected crowd in attendance, Martinus graciously swung her guitar over her shoulder at this Friday afternoon gig up at Forbidden Spirits and starting using that voice as she worked her way through her set. She drew
songs from country to rock to pop and slipped between those genres effortlessly. While this was an exceptionally causal gig, she carried herself with the same calm and presence that we have witnessed every time that we have heard her perform.
Having a tire go flat as we pulled into the parking lot meant that rather than the brief visits we put in as we travel from artist's gig to artist's gig, we got to relax and soak in the entire two sets of chosen songs for this early fall
show at the now popular live music venue, where warm drinks were served alongside their usual offerings.
All in all, it was a great way to spend the afternoon. Martinus just makes one feel good. Connected. Comfortable. At home even.
Songs that Martinus sang on this afternoon included Fire And Rain, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Love Is A Battlefield, Soulshine, Set Fire To The Rain, Can’t Find My Way Home, I'm On Fire, Bathroom Scale (an original), Back On The Chain Gang,
Jolene, Crazy, Dreams, Rolling In The Deep, Son Of A Preacher Man, Me And Bobby McGee, Valerie, The Joke, and many, many others.
