After having shot over 140 shows already this year, it's rare that I get as impressed with an artist's performance as I was by the one Nevaeh Dyson delivered up at The Vibrant Vine on Saturday afternoon. While she is barely a teen and this was
only her second stage performance, neither one of those things were what pulled me in.
It would have been quite impossible to not notice how perfect her pitch was on the songs she sang. Even when she was taking liberties and changing up the melodies of tunes as she applied her personal style to them, the lines were very musical
and executed exquisitely. Her takes on very well known songs made it clear that she is very comfortable in her own skin as an artist. She possesses a keen sense of direction and she is going wherever it leads. Her version of the Elton John classic "Your Song"
was very compelling and left me wondering if it was supremely sophisticated or elegantly simple. Not bad for a 16 year old.
Dyson presents herself and her songs in a most unassuming way, displaying an alluring mix of transparency, vulnerability, vision, hopefulness, joy, and simple fun. She is, or at the very least appears to be, totally at ease on stage performing
in front of an audience. I shudder to think how good she is going to be after even just a few more gigs. Scary thought, but the best kind of scary.
As I write these words the day after catching her up at The Vine, I'm thinking that on top of everything else I have mentioned, it's the quality of her voice. It's fullness. It's warmth. I am so looking forward to watching her mature as an artist
as she continues to get out there and share her gifting with the world. Thank you, Nevaeh, for a delightful show.
