Martin Lord
Jazz Drummer
Lord established himself as a versatile, accomplished local drummer from an early age. Studying most styles of music, he focused on jazz which allowed a freedom of musical expression and provided an appreciation for the technical skills needed to
play the drum set.
He has performed many styles of music, appearing with notable musicians such as Denny Christianson, Greg Yazinitsky, Brad Turner, Ian McDougall, Don Clark and Dee Daniels, Phil Dwyer, Gabriel Mark Hasselbach and Kenny Blues Boss Wayne.
Lord moved to Edmonton to study economics and political science at the University of Alberta, and while there he played in the U of A Big Band. He also attended legendary big band leader Stan Kenton's Big Band clinic in Sacremento, California in 1977.
When he returned to the Okanagan while playing with the Westside Big Band and Michael Garding Big Band, he co-founded Just In Time, picking up three Okanagan Music Awards for best jazz group.
As an always in-demand sideman, Lord continues to find work with a varied collection of local artists. Now, ten years after Just In Time, he is back collaborating with fellow local jazz standout Neville Bowman and creating compelling music that they
find challenging and extremely satisfying to play. As one of the finest local jazz drummers, Lord is definitely part of the Kelowna jazz scene.
